Holiday Card Action 2005
Sahrawi Human Rights Defenders – Morocco
Mohamed El Moutaouakil, Houssein Lidri, Brahim Noumria, Larbi Messaoud, Ali Salem Tamek, Aminatou Haidar and H’mad Hammad are long-standing human rights defenders who have worked to collect and disseminate information about human rights violations in Morocco and in the territory of Western Sahara, which Morocco controversially annexed in 1975.
Beginning in May 2005, hundreds of protesters took to the streets in Western Sahara to denounce perceived heavy-handed policing and to call for Western Sahara’s independence from Morocco. Over 100 people were detained during or as a result of the demonstrations. Many of those detained allege that they were tortured or ill-treated, either to force them to sign confessions, to intimidate them from protesting further, or to punish them for advocating Western Sahara’s independence.
During the summer of 2005, security officers arrested Aminatou Haidar, Mohamed El Moutaouakil, Houssein Lidri, Brahim Noumria and Larbi Messaoud, and reportedly tortured Houssein Lidri and Brahim Noumria in custody. Ali Salem Tamek and H’mad Hammad were also arrested, reportedly in connection with their openly held views in favor of Western Saharan independence.
